Sound Familiar?

The character who was vivid in your head fell flat on the page.

It happens to every writer. The problem is never a lack of imagination — it's that the details live in a dozen different places, or nowhere at all. A reader can feel a thin character in the first ten pages.

I introduced a character in act one and completely contradicted her backstory by act three. The reader caught it before I did.

Cost: a pass from the studio

My notes are in three notebooks, a Google Doc, and my phone. When I finally sat down to write, I couldn't find half of them.

Cost: hours lost every session

Every character sounded like me. They all made the same jokes, used the same words. Nobody had their own voice.

Cost: flat, forgettable dialogue

The Difference

Stop scattering. Start structuring.

Before

Backstory scattered across notebooks and docs

Characters contradict themselves between drafts

Every character sounds the same on the page

Relationships tracked in your head — until you forget one

Nothing ready to hand a director or co-writer

→

After

Every detail organized into ten structured sections

One drafted pass keeps every field internally consistent

A Voice Test that proves each character sounds distinct

A visual web that maps every relationship at a glance

Export-ready as PDF, DOCX, PNG, or JSON

What you get

Ten Sections, Every Dimension

Vitals & Appearance, Outlook & Temperament, Core Drivers, Background & Family, Beliefs & Philosophy, Romance & Family Life, Career, Story Mechanics, Related To, and Voice & Secrets — every angle a working writer actually needs.

10 Sections

One-Click Draft, Whole Character

Enter a name, entity type, and a physical description, then generate the rest in one pass — every section drafted together so nothing contradicts anything else.

AI Drafting

Hear Them Speak

The Voice Test generates three lines of dialogue in your character's established voice, across five scenarios — under pressure, casual conversation, confrontation, comic relief, or a grief and vulnerable moment.

Voice Test

See Every Connection

A visual Relationship Web maps every character in your project as a node, with labeled, colored edges for Ally, Family, Rival, Enemy, and more — including siblings who aren't full characters of their own.

Relationship Web

Any Cast Size, One Roster

Build a two-hander or a forty-character ensemble. Every character lives in a drag-to-reorder roster, with or without a project attached.

Any Cast Size

Export However You Work

Copy or export your whole roster as PDF or DOCX, download the Relationship Web as a PNG or PDF, or export the raw structured data as JSON.

PART OF THE SCREENWRITING SUITE

Character Dossier is where your cast comes to life.

Character Dossier stands on its own — build a full character bible without ever touching another tool. It also pairs naturally with the rest of the Screenwriting Suite: summarize a profile into Formly's character notes, build out the cast behind a Log Line Machine concept, or carry real depth into a Treatment Writer draft.

Works well together

Formly

Summarize a profile built here into Formly's character notes section.

Works well together

Log Line Machine

Generate a logline first, then build full profiles for the characters it introduces.

Works well together

Treatment Writer

Pull real character depth from here into a full narrative treatment.

How It Works

A full character bible in four steps.

1

Add A Character

Give them a name, an entity type, and a role in the story — that's enough to start.

2

Draft The Whole Dossier

One redraft fills all ten sections at once, built around a physical description you write yourself.

3

Test The Voice, Map The Web

Run the Voice Test to hear them speak, then connect them to the rest of your cast in the Relationship Web.

4

Export & Write

Download your roster as PDF or DOCX, or the web as PNG or PDF, and start writing with confidence.

Under The Hood

Ten sections. Every dimension of a person.

Great characters aren't built from a single field. Character Dossier structures every profile the way a working writer actually thinks — from a name and a face all the way down to what they'll never say out loud.

Identity & Presence

Vitals & Appearance — age, gender, entity type, build, physical description, and role in the story. Outlook & Temperament — worldview, self-image, intelligence, articulation, accent, and health.

Psychology & Belief

Core Drivers — conscious goal, unconscious need, greatest fear, and how they respond under pressure. Beliefs & Philosophy — religion, politics, philosophy, and what they're proud or ashamed of.

Family & History

Background & Family — childhood, parental relationships, and named siblings. Romance & Family Life — romantic status, romantic history, and views on children.

Career & Story Role

Career — occupation, attitude toward work, and colleagues. Story Mechanics — motivation, opposition, why they oppose it, strengths, and weaknesses.

Voice & Connections

Related To — every relationship to another character or sibling, tagged Ally, Family, Rival, Enemy, and more. Voice & Secrets — speech quirks, expressions, a hidden secret, and a sample voice line.

Built For Writers Like You

Whatever you're writing, it starts with character.

Feature Screenwriters

Build complete bibles for complex ensemble casts — and keep every one straight.

TV Writers

Track character consistency across every episode and every season.

Game Writers

NPC and protagonist profiles sketched with the same rigor as NPC Forge's own character bibles.

Development Execs

Review character depth and arc before committing to a greenlight.

Co-Writers

A shared character reference both partners can export and annotate.

Why It Matters

The Voice Test is the moment writers hear their character for the first time — the difference between a name on a page and a person you can actually hear speak.

Does Character Dossier work without a project?

Yes — every character lives in the same structured system whether or not you've selected a project. Pick a project before creating a character to keep it grouped with the rest of that project's work.

Can I regenerate a single field instead of the whole dossier?

Yes — every AI-writable field has its own regenerate button, so you can refresh just one detail without redrafting the whole character. Each field is capped at 3 regenerations per month to keep quality high; a full (Re)Draft is still there whenever you want everything redone together.

What happens to relationships if I delete a character?

Any relationship pointing at a deleted character is automatically removed from whoever it belonged to — nothing is left dangling or pointing at a character that no longer exists.
