The Small Task That Eats Your Session

You sat down to write. An hour later you're still naming a character.

A name has to fit the setting, the culture, the era, and your ear — all at once. Generic name generators don't know a 1920s Chicago surname from a synthetic AI designation. So you spin your wheels on a task that should take seconds, and your writing time evaporates.

I named three characters similar-sounding names by accident and confused readers for the entire first act before anyone caught it.

Cost: a confused reader

My sci-fi cast all had names that sounded like a random keyboard smash. None of them felt like they came from the same world.

Cost: a world that didn't hold together

I'd find the perfect name, forget to write it down, and lose it completely by the next writing session.

Cost: the perfect name, gone

The Difference

Stop guessing at names. Start building a cast.

Before

Generic name generators that can't tell one culture from another

Sci-fi names that sound like keyboard smash

No memory — the perfect name gets lost by next session

Accidental name collisions across your cast

Every name typed in from scratch, one at a time

→

After

Real cultural and religious naming traditions, era-aware

Species-based naming that fits your world — human to synthetic

A saved roster that never loses a kept name

Generate a batch of 8-10 at once, not one at a time

Lock the parts you love and regenerate the rest

What you get

Real Cultural & Religious Pools

Anglo-American, Latin American, East Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Nordic, Slavic, Mediterranean, and more — plus Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh naming traditions. Every name is pulled from that tradition, not a generic list with a label attached.

Culture-Aware Naming

Seven Species, Matched To Character Dossier

Biological, Mechanical Construct, Alien, Artificial Intelligence, two mechanical/biological hybrid types, and Other — real-world traditions where they apply, invented conventions where they don't. The same species list Character Dossier uses, so a sent-over name carries its species straight across.

Species Support

Lock What Works, Regenerate The Rest

Love a surname but not the first name? Lock the parts you want to keep and generate fresh candidates for everything else.

Lock & Regenerate

A Whole Batch, One Click

Get 8-10 name candidates in a single generation — not one at a time. Compare them side by side and keep the ones that fit.

8-10 At Once

A Roster That Remembers

Every name you keep is saved, persistent across sessions — build a cast over weeks and never lose a name you liked.

Saved & Persistent

Works With Or Without A Project

File kept names under a project to keep them with the rest of that work, or keep them loose in your own session — either way, nothing is lost.

Flexible Scope

PART OF THE SCREENWRITING SUITE

The Name Bank is where your cast gets real names.

The Name Bank stands on its own — generate and keep names for any project. It also pairs naturally with the rest of the Screenwriting Suite: build out a character's full profile in Character Dossier, draft a pitch in Formly, or expand a treatment in Treatment Writer — then bring a kept name from here into whichever one you're working in.

Works well together

Character Dossier

Keep a name here, then build out the full character it belongs to.

Works well together

Formly

Name your cast here, then bring the names into Formly's character notes.

Works well together

Log Line Machine

Generate a logline first, then name the characters it introduces.

How It Works

From blank cast list to a saved roster in four steps.

1

Set The Filters

Choose culture, religious tradition, and species to match your character — or leave any of them open.

2

Generate A Batch

Get 8-10 name candidates at once. Lock the parts you love — like a surname — and regenerate the rest.

3

Keep The Ones That Fit

Add keepers to your roster, filed under the current project.

4

Come Back Anytime

Kept names persist across sessions, ready whenever you need them.

For The Worlds You Invent

A 1920s surname and a synthetic designation are not the same problem.

Most name tools give you one flat list. The Name Bank knows the difference between a real culture's naming logic and an invented species' — so whatever you're writing, the names belong to it.

Biological

Real cultural and religious naming traditions, era-aware, for grounded and historical fiction.

Alien

Alien naming conventions that feel coherent — a species, not a keyboard smash.

Mechanical Construct / Artificial Intelligence

Invented, machine-appropriate naming for constructs and synthetic intelligences — no real-world culture assumed.

Mechanical ↔ Biological

For characters mid-transition between machine and flesh — real or invented naming, whichever fits the character's own history.

Built For Writers With Casts To Fill

If your story has more than one character, it's for you.

Ensemble Screenwriters

Consistent cultural naming across a large character list — no collisions.

Game Writers

NPC names that fit the world's cultural logic, not a random string generator.

Novelists

Period- and world-appropriate names for historical and sci-fi fiction.

Writers' Rooms

A shared reference that prevents accidental name collisions across episodes.

Why It Matters

Naming a character is deceptively difficult. The name has to fit the setting, the culture, the era, the character's background, and the writer's ear — all at once. The Name Bank handles that in seconds, not an hour.

Does The Name Bank work without a project?

Yes — every kept name lives in the same structured system whether or not you've selected a project. Pick a project before keeping a name to group it with the rest of that project's work.

Can I send kept names into Character Dossier automatically?

Yes — every kept name has a "Send to Character Dossier" action that creates a new character there with its name, species, culture, and religious tradition already filled in. The new character lands in Character Dossier's "No Project" list, ready for you to build out further. This requires an active Character Dossier subscription of your own.

Can I import a list of names I already have?

Yes, from a JSON file — upload one from the Kept Names section and it imports directly into your roster, structured fields included if the file has them (a plain list of name strings works too). Importing from a Word document isn't available yet — that's planned as a future addition, not something available today.
